The European plum is one of the oldest cultivated fruit trees, grown for over 2,000 years. Remarkably, it is a naturally occurring hexaploid — carrying six full sets of chromosomes — believed to be a spontaneous ancient hybrid between cherry plum and blackthorn that has never been found truly wild.
