iNaturalist integration
Push your discoveries
to real science.
Pixel Wild can send the discoveries you choose to your iNaturalist account as observations. Verified observations flow to GBIF and help researchers track species ranges, climate impacts, and biodiversity worldwide.
Why we built this
Spotting something is the first step. Sharing it where scientists can actually use the data is the next one. iNaturalist is the open community catalog of life on Earth — by connecting your account, the discoveries you make in Pixel Wild can do real work outside the game.
How the connection works
We don't run a full iNaturalist sign-in yet, so the link is a token you paste once. On the web at pixelwild.dev/me/inaturalist you'll:
- Sign in to iNaturalist in another tab.
- Open the iNat API token page and copy the token.
- Paste it into Pixel Wild and hit Connect.
The token is good for 24 hours. After that, paste a fresh one to keep pushing. We'll replace this with a proper sign-in once we're approved as an iNat OAuth app.
What gets sent
Each push is one observation, sent only when you tap Push on that discovery. We send:
- The original photo you took.
- The date of the capture.
- The species (or coarser rank) you confirm in the review sheet.
- Location at the precision you choose — exact, city-level, or none.
- The license you choose (CC BY by default, all rights reserved if you prefer).
You review every observation
iNaturalist's policy on AI-suggested IDs requires a human in the loop, and we agree with it. Every push opens a review sheet first, where you can change the species, drop to a coarser rank if you're not sure, adjust the location precision, and pick a license before submitting. Nothing is sent in the background.
The AI-suggestion footer
Because Pixel Wild's initial ID comes from an on-device model, every observation we send appends one line to the description:
Initial ID suggested by Pixel Wild's on-device model — please review and refine.
This is added server-side so it can't be stripped, and it makes our contributions transparent to the iNat community. Your own description goes above it.
Where to find it
Open the app, go to Me, then tap the iNaturalist card. The same page on the web — pixelwild.dev/me/inaturalist — is where the actual connect-and-push flow lives, since iNat needs your account in a browser anyway.
