About

The Viceroy is a striking orange-and-black North American butterfly long cited as the textbook example of Batesian mimicry of the Monarch — but research later showed it is actually unpalatable itself, making the pair a rare case of Müllerian mimicry where both species warn off predators together. A thin black postmedian line crossing the hindwing is the key field mark distinguishing it from the Monarch.
