A compact flowering herb from northern China and Korea whose five flat petals have distinctively fringed, toothed edges giving each bloom a lacy fringe. The genus *Dianthus* — meaning 'flower of the gods' in Greek — has been cultivated as an ornamental for over two thousand years.
