A rugged American dual-purpose breed developed in 19th-century Rhode Island by crossing Malay gamefowl with other Asian and Mediterranean stock. Its deep mahogany-red plumage and hardy constitution made it a backyard-flock favorite prized for steady brown-egg laying.
