About

This large dabbling duck inhabits freshwater marshes and coastal wetlands. It can filter-feed by rapidly pumping water through its bill to trap tiny crustaceans.

Life cycle

   A clutch of eggs rests in a down-lined nest near water, covered and warmed by the brooding female.

   A downy hatchling follows its mother to the water within hours and feeds itself almost immediately.
