The Sphynx's apparent baldness is actually a fine peach-fuzz down arising from a spontaneous mutation in a Toronto litter in 1966 — without guard hairs to absorb oils, their skin must be bathed weekly. To compensate for heat lost through bare skin, Sphynx run a core body temperature nearly 4 °F (2 °C) higher than furred cats.
