About

A lungless salamander native to the streams and seepages of the Appalachian Mountains, named for its mottled, seal-like skin pattern. It breathes entirely through its skin and the lining of its mouth, having no lungs at all.

Life cycle

   A jelly-coated egg is laid in water and develops over days into an aquatic larva.

   A gilled tadpole swims and grazes on algae, slowly absorbing its tail and growing limbs.
